Lou Escobar is a photographer and director who taught herself french, while being based in Paris. Her work is characterized by a strongly cinematic and colorful style. Invited to Senegal by Blachère Foundation, for a residence managed by Versant Sud on the theme of love, Lou Escobar gives us a vision between normality and science fiction.

"At first, I wanted to try to make a documentary, but once I arrived in Senegal, I realized that it would be very complicated, also because the people I approached often didn't want to be immortalized.
Hence the idea of creating a science fiction setting in West Africa. So I decided to shoot my own editorial. And while I was making up the subjects, I thought it would be interesting to weave a story on the border between horror and science fiction.
To create this contrast between normality and science fiction, we mixed reality with extraordinary elements, mainly experimenting with makeup, while leaving the style and direction unchanged. I didn't want anything over the top, which might be tasteless. We only used colored contact lenses, fake ears and something that could alter facial features.

At first, I didn't think I was creating something strange, disturbing. But in the end, we pushed ourselves to create something alternative. We imagined a specific style for each model, and it wasn't until creating the looks that I realized we were offering something new."

The Jean-Paul Blachère corporate foundation, since 2004, wants to participate in the development of Africa by helping contemporary creation and the promotion of its artists. In its art center, it presents exhibitions and welcomes artists in residence. She also organizes creative workshops in Africa and Europe and participates in major African biennials, including that of Dakar in particular. She is in charge of the conservation of the works of the Blachère Collection.
